Yep I GOT ANOTHER COMPANION!!! Haha I think I hold the record for the most companions in 3 months as a missionary.
On Monday President Rowley called and asked if there was anyway we could fit 3 Sisters in our apartment. I told him that it would be kind of hard but that we could do it because what President wants goes, and obviously he has a good reason for it. So on Wednesday Sister Patton moved here from Surabaya. She is from Michigan. She is half Korean half American, so she lived in Korea until she was 13 and then she moved to America. So she can speak Korean. She has been on her mission for about 9 months. So now we are a threesome! Right now Sister Utomo is sleeping on a roll up mat on the floor, but today we are supposed to be getting a bunkbed to put over top of the trundle bed we have now. So far I have had 6 companions in Jakarta and total for my mission is 12. That's almost more than one companion for every transfer I've been here. So that's fun :) This week we decided to give Sister _______ the Cerita-Cerita Perjanjian Baru (New testament stories) book so she could read that and learn about Jesus. We read the first one with her and then told her to read the next two before we came back, and when we went back on Saturday she had already read 14 chapters! She would point to all the pictures and be like "That guys wicked and he wanted to kick Jesus out" and she would tell about the miracles that he did and it was so cool. She's still slow and steady but she's really great and one day she will be able to get that testimony she is looking for. Also this week we met with ________. We read 2 Nephi 31 and she said her favorite verse was when it tells us to follow Christ and repent and be baptized. She didn't understand the whole thing about priesthood authority, but we explained it again and she kind of got it. She said she would have to ask her mom if she could get baptized. She didn't come to church again yesterday, but she still had a desire to learn so we're still going to work with her. She really wants to find the truth, it's just a process for everyone. Sister Patton was in Jakarta for her first week while waiting for her VISA, so she remembered a less active member that me and Sister Xiao couldn't find when we were white washing. But Sister Patton remembered where she lived so we went there this week and she came to church with her two kids! That's so cool that Heavenly Father puts us in the right place and he brought Sister Patton here so she could help Sister Rianah come back. So Awesome!!. There was also another less active member that came to church as well! It's really great when you can see that your effort is actually making a difference. I hope you have a great summer week and that you're enjoying the same weather I am haha. Love you!! Love, Sister Davis So to answer all your questions Mom, so Lebaran was 2 days but they pretty much get the whole week off. So today is the first day of kind of normal work, but the kids don't go back to school for another week so it's still pretty empty. It was so great because there was pretty much no traffic all week, but that means that we just have to find more places to go because no one is here to teach. It was fun though, because there were lots of tourists from Australia. They are on break too so we got to talk to Bules and we went to touristy places and had like hundreds of pictures taken with us because we're white people and we just handed out cards and pamphlets like crazy. So that was most of our week.
I could tell you about Sister Fuglsang but the exciting thing is that she is moving! She is moving to the city west of Jakarta called Tangerang and I am getting ANOTHER new companion! This is already my fifth companion in Jakarta haha. It's just like a transit here so I get all the companions for a couple of weeks and I can't move haha. So my new companion is Sister Utomo! She is from Surabaya but was working in Bali before so she is from Bali which is way cool. So there will be an excuse for me to go there someday haha. Other than touristy stuff this week, trying to find people to talk to, we still taught Anyuk. She definitely still needs for it to be slow and steady for her to have spiritual experiences. She doesn't really believe it for herself yet, but she still enjoys having us come. We taught her about prayer again more specifically so hopefully she can apply that in her life. I think if she realizes that Heavenly Father is real and that he does answer her prayers that will be a great step in receiving a testimony of him. There isn't much to say because life is pretty normal. I guess the most exciting thing today is that the electricity is out in the mission home right now but there is a generator that is connected to Presidents office and the Wifi so we got some laptops and we can still email thank goodness haha. That's about all I've got for today. Hopefully I will be able to think of more things to say this next week and now that people are actually coming back to Jakarta we can have people to teach again. Love you all so much, Sister Davis Happy Lebaran! Lebaran is the Muslim holiday where they break their fast for the month of Rhamadan. I honestly don't know that much about it, except for they get a month off of school during the month of the fast and everyone goes home to their kampung so Jakarta is not even the same city. It was SOOOO EMPTY on our ride from our apartment to the mission office. It usually takes us like 20 minutes, but today it only took 10 and our taxi driver was kind of slow.
With that being said, since everyone is out of town for the next week, that means they aren't here to be taught.. So we had kind of a slow week last week and this next week will be really slow too, but that's okay :) There are still a few people who don't go home and since this week is still off for most of them we are hoping to get a few new investigators! So on Monday Sister Angelie was told that she would be released to go home and get better. So Wednesday morning she was released and I got another new companion! This is already my fourth companion in Jakarta and my 10th companion! That's a lot of companions! I guess the Lord has something for me to learn from each of them :) My companions name is Sister Fuglsang. She is originally from Tasmania, Australia (How sweet is that) but now she lives in Brisbane. She is an art teacher in high school and she is SO talented. She can draw a sketch of the savior so fast and it is so amazing. I hope I can learn a lot from her. She is about 8 months into her mission and just moved her from Solo. So the past week we have done a lot of contacting to fill our pipeline again because it was pretty empty from being home for so much. Sister ______ is still doing SO well! We taught about Joseph Smith and the restoration on Tuesday. At first when we talked about the first vision she thought it was enlightenment, but that's because she relates everything we say to something she is familiar with. But she understood it quite well too. She read the part in the pamphlet about Joseph Smith and the Priesthood for her homework and she asked questions about it. She is quite a diligent investigator and we love that! On Saturday we taught her about Repentance. I wasn't sure how that was going to go down because before she has been so stuck on the fact that when we sin we have spots and they stick with us until we are reincarnated. But when we taught her she didn't go against what we were teaching. We read about Alma the Younger in Alma 36 and the Joy he felt from repenting. She asked after we talked about all the steps and gave her the commitment to pray and repent of her sins, "What do I need to repent of?" She hadn't had a Christian background so she doesn't really know specific commandments besides to pray and to read the scriptures and to be kind to others like she has been taught her whole life. She usually stays at home so she doesn't really have a lot of opportunities to sin anyway. We told her just to be kind to Brother ________ and to ask forgiveness if she uses a strong or mean voice with him at home. She is so cute and so wants to do what is right. On Sunday morning the Busway wasn't going to start until at least 9:00 because there was a prayer for Labaran in the morning. So she was debating on being able to come to church because of the buses and there is no other transportation for her. We were pretty sure that she wasn't going to be able to come, but at 8:30 they left home and they showed up at church at 10:15 in gospel principles and I haven't been so happy to see anyone at church before. She really is feeling the Light of Christ and the happiness that coming to church brings in her life that she would come even though she knew she was going to miss sacrament meeting. This week we are going to focus on the rest of the gospel of Jesus Christ and how the atonement really makes it possible for us to become cleansed from sin to return to our Heavenly Father. We are going to give her a baptismal commitment this week and I'm so excited about that! She lights my world on the mission and I am so grateful for every person the Lord gives me to be able to teach. This week was also Zone Conference. We have them so often now and it's just in Jakarta so it's more normal than it used to be. We talked about the importance of having investigators come to church and how to help them get there. It's fun to see the progress of the mission. President Rowley has been here for a year this next week! Crazy how time really does fly! I hope you have a fantastic week :) Love, Sister Davis |
